#103 Female coding tutorials, getting paid for your diversity work, VogueandCode and more
This week I was honoured to grace the stage of the Innovation Showcase powered by UKBT and AFBE - an event that focussed on showing what people are working on.
I met some dope people:
The ones that stood out for me were
Temika (of STEMinStyle) - she spoke about transforming the functionality of fashion and tech that works on fabric with players such as CuteCircuit and Loomia
Deji Balogun who shared some cool prototypes in the smart home space to solve the problem of missed deliveries
Adiba Maduegbuna who’s an Android engineer by day and DJ by night and is doing some cool stuff with music and technology
and spoke to other cool peeps about Huawei, the change in TV structure and a coffee shop that uses blockchain.

What Monzo Learned From Scaling its Lending Team
We all love Monzo right?

This article, explains really well why they are lending
This article is from the Product Manager (Revenue)
As we’ve grown, we’ve tried to develop a culture and set of processes that aim to motivate and empower people to make good decisions at speed, without having to ask for permission
One reason I really like this piece is that they show qualities of forward thinking management company - one where everyone is bought into the mission, understands the role they place and a shared understanding of what they should be working on with the autonomy to achieve it.

Makers’ Retreat: Gives you the space you need to take your side project from idea to reality
Their promise of value summarised:
In your regular environment, things can eventually become stale and all-too-ordinary. Switching the scene for days at a time can refresh your senses and revitalise your creativity and love for meaningful work. A break away from home can burst the flames to a new breakthrough, and even a higher, broader perspective for your life.

A 16 Point Guide On How To Get Paid Your Worth As A Person Of Color
A lot of people in our space are getting asked to speak on diversity panels, do research, etc all to help these organisations “seem” more inclusive.
There’s a discussion about this (see below) and people want their money in exchange for their time.

Have you been paid to speak at a conference? Please share the type of talk (keynote, workshop, talk), the name of the conference and how much you got paid. Thank you! 🙏🏽
There isn't a lot of transparency around this. I want folks from marginalized communities to be informed.
