#90 Free online tech mentors, Really usable API tool, diversity coding hackathons and more
Last week I was building a Todo list app and I clocked that I hadn’t really broken down what JavaScript (JS) can do.
JavaScript lets you add interactive components to a site like photo galleries, tabbed panels, or form validation and is used to build complex web applications, like Gmail, Google Docs, and Google Maps. As well as interactive web sites, you can also us JS to make high performance web servers, control desktop applications like Sketch, and even to create desktop apps.
This week I referred back to the Mozilla Developer Network which is a great resource for understanding JS.
I have also started breaking down my code into parts. They say good software writers break down chunks into smaller parts and make sure each bit works. Then there’s unit and functional tests and all that stuff (FML!)

Phaser - A fast, fun and free open source HTML5 game framework
Good library for games - going to get my younger cousins on this so they can learn the skill early.
Again, I wanna be making products people want to use, but people say that learning to build games helps you really understand concepts like object-orientated programming, classes and working with elements.
I’m guessing these habits make passionate gamers good at UI.
Postman | API Development Environment
Found out about this cool tool this week, especially if you’re building API’s.
One of my friends said he uses it postman to make sure the API is functioning as expected and I like the UI.

Excited to see more people from diverse backgrounds getting to the crux of technology. I’m excited for a future where people that look like me can build things quickly and take advantage of the lower barriers into entry whilst building cool shit. Bit by bit, we are able to start and launch real businesses and you’ve got cool organisations like CodeUntapped doing diversity hackathons, communities like YSYS really connecting the dots (which just celebrated their 2 year birthday) and UKBT building innovation projects.
