#97 I got some dope jQuery plugins to share
So after going through the trenches with Vanilla (i.e. plain Javascript) I treated myself to using jQuery - a popular Javascript library, so far I’ve seen that it makes selecting elements, and doing animations a heck of a lot easier.
If you’ve done basic CSS before then you know that you can select elements by class, unique id or tag names. With jQuery they also allow you to select by:
:radio buttons
:checkboxes
:visible/:hidden elements
access items with pdfs based on some string syntax
I came across this directory of good plug-ins…and Unheap is meant to be another good directory). It’s much better than trying to Google it and coming across all the dead ones.
I thought I would start with a simple plugin that allows me to choose the elements that I want to always stay visible.
I also learnt about how to add a carousel, a very popular homepage effect. A carousel condense multiple slides of content (images, text, videos). One of the most prominent use is to highlight content on your website and a condensed way to get to it. Here’s a cool plugin for that
Minimised versions of files
Lastly, one cool thing I clocked is if you ever want to just use a file and want it to perform quicker just use the min (aka minimised) file. If you want to learn the programming that makes the slick plugin and understand how it works, then maybe so you can modify it, then you can use the standard CSS or JS file
How I am tackling tech privacy:
TL;DR:
I am making it harder for Google to sell to me and buying back my data, one less search at a time
I have been using DuckDuckGo in Chrome for a couple weeks now. My rationale…Google’s algorithms mean there is a lot of confirmation bias in the results that they show me. Since search engines are the gateway to the internet, I want my search results to prioritise content from the community and not Google showing me what it believes I want to see - Google also follows me around with ads in gmail, youtube, and other Google products.
DuckDuckGo’s privacy policy is this: privacy policy is simple: they don’t collect or share any of your personal information
If I want to do a Google search. I intentionally type google in the url, hit tab, and I can do a search from any page.
